What are clear aligners?

Traditional orthodontics requires fixed brackets and wires to move teeth into the optimum position, but with clear aligners, we can achieve the same results with a clear and removable aligner. These aligners are similar to the retainers worn at the end of treatment, but they are made from a strong and lightweight plastic that applies gentle pressure to the teeth. The patient wears a series of aligners, and each one moves their teeth a little closer to perfect alignment.

With so many clear aligner systems available on the market, it can be difficult to know which one is right for you. What is the most important is that you choose a dentist-led treatment plan with a dental practice you can trust. The Dental Place Warwick has helped thousands of teens to achieve their dream smiles without the need for fixed metal braces To learn more about our innovative clear aligner treatment plans for teens, book an appointment today.

Clear Aligners Vs Fixed Braces

While fixed braces are commonly associated with teenagers, this isn’t the only treatment plan available. There are a number of benefits to be explored when choosing a clear aligner system, and many can help teens to complete treatment without feeling self-conscious. The main difference is that clear aligners are nearly invisible, which paves the way for teeth straightening without feeling shy or self conscious.

Another key benefit of clear aligners over fixed braces is that they can be removed. This allows teens to enjoy all of their favourite food items without worrying about damaging their braces. It also makes it much easier to care for teeth during treatment, as teens can simply remove their aligners when they brush their teeth. And since aligner changes take place at home, they won’t have to visit the dentist for every adjustment.

Is my teen a good candidate for Clear Aligners?

Most patients can enjoy similar results to fixed braces, provided they are able to follow the treatment plan carefully. After we have assessed if your teen’s orthodontic case can be treated with clear aligners, we’ll then look at how well they can follow the plan. It’s vital for teens to wear their aligners for 20-22 hours per day. Failing to achieve this could cause the treatment plan to fail, and we’ll need to start again with a new case of aligners. Failing to follow the treatment plan can also make treatment more uncomfortable. Very forgetful teens and those that might lose their aligners might want to consider fixed braces to help success.

If your dentist has recommended orthodontic treatment but you don’t want to wait for NHS treatment, book an appointment with our orthodontics team to learn more about private treatment. You can also explore private options if your child doesn’t meet the criteria for NHS orthodontics.

Treatment begins with impressions and scans of your teen’s teeth. This allows us to design a treatment plan that will deliver the best possible results as quickly as possible. These scans are sent to a lab to create the series of clear aligners.

Aligners need to be worn for 20-22 hours per day, every day. They should only be removed to eat, drink anything other than water, and for daily brushing. Aligners are changed every 10-14 days according to the treatment plan.

At the end of treatment, teens can return to the practice for their retainers. They’ll switch to wearing these at night time only to help keep their teeth looking beautiful.

Frequently Asked Questions

It’s common to have lots of questions about your treatment. We’ve answered some of the most popular questions below.

Once patients stop wearing their aligners, their teeth will naturally start to shift into the easiest possible alignment, and this isn’t always perfect alignment. This is why patients switch to wearing a retainer at the end of treatment to help keep the teeth in the correct position.

No, unfortunately this treatment is not available on the NHS. For clear aligners, the only option is to opt for private orthodontics. Choosing private treatment offers some advantages, including a wider range of treatment plans and greater flexibility on the start date.

Yes, this treatment can be highly effective for helping teens to achieve a straighter smile without having to wear fixed braces. If your teen is self-conscious about their smile already, then a low profile clear aligner system can help.
