Dental sedation explained

Dental sedation explained

During your dental visit, we want you to feel as relaxed and comfortable as possible. We understand that for many people, attending a dental appointment can be a real source of stress. That’s why we work hard to ensure that nervous patients feel supported, heard, and never rushed – whether it's a routine check-up or a more involved procedure.

When dental visits trigger intense fear or anxiety, we offer safe and effective sedation options to help put you at ease. We’ll take the time to talk through your concerns and recommend the most suitable approach for your needs.

Sedation options include:

  • IV sedation – a deeply calming option for patients with moderate to severe dental anxiety.

  • Inhalation sedation (coming soon) – a lighter sedation option that helps you feel relaxed but with no downtime.

  • A calming environment – including soft lighting, gentle communication, and extra time built into appointments.

  • Supportive care throughout – our experienced team will monitor you closely and make sure you're comfortable from start to finish.

What is Restorative Dentistry

IV sedation for nervous patients

IV sedation is one of the most popular types of dental sedation. You will feel relaxed and at ease during your treatment, and it might even feel like the treatment time is much shorter. Most patients don’t have any memory of the treatment, so it won’t provide further triggers for your phobia.

You’ll be in what is known as a “twilight state”, where you are conscious and able to answer questions, but you’ll feel incredibly relaxed. The medication is administered with a small tube in the back of your hand or your arm. After the treatment, you’ll feel sleepy and it will take around 24 hours for the effects to completely wear off.

This type of sedation is especially helpful for patients with dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex, or those undergoing longer procedures. It allows you to get the care you need in a calm, controlled way, without feeling overwhelmed. Since the experience often feels so smooth and fast, many patients feel far more confident returning for future appointments.

Key things to know:

  • You’ll remain conscious but feel deeply relaxed throughout the treatment.

  • Most patients have little to no memory of the procedure afterwards.

  • The effects wear off gradually, typically within 24 hours.

  • It’s suitable for both minor and more complex dental treatments.

Please note: You will need a chaperone to take you home and stay with you for 24 hours after the treatment. You cannot drive or operate any machinery during this time.

Inhalation sedation (coming soon)

Another popular form of sedation is inhalation sedation. This treatment combines nitrous oxide and oxygen and is administered with a small nasal mask. This combination creates a mild sense of relaxation and wears off very quickly. You’ll be completely conscious and responsive, but you will feel more at ease with your treatment.

It can be used for treatments of any length, including routine fillings to more complex root canals. You won’t experience the same amnesiac effects as IV sedation, and the effects also wear off much more quickly. There are minimal side effects, with some patients reporting a light headache or some nausea. Inhalation sedation is suitable for both adults and children.

What to expect from your treatment journey

We want you to feel empowered and informed every step of the way. Understand what to expect during your treatment with this simple guide. Your exact treatment plan might change, but this will be explained during your consultation.

If you’re nervous about your visit to the dentist or planned dental work, book a consultation with our team. We can discuss the options available for nervous patients, including help to overcome your phobias, and dental sedation where required.

We currently offer IV sedation for adults only and will soon be able to offer inhalation sedation for both adults and children. Speak to our team about the benefits of each option to decide which is right for you.

You’ll need to arrive at the practice a little earlier for your appointment. This will allow our dental team to prepare you for your treatment. You can relax in our comfortable waiting area. If you have a chaperone with you, they will be able to enjoy complimentary refreshments while you undergo treatment.

Once the IV sedation has taken effect, we will begin your treatment. You will be awake throughout the treatment, but if you drop off to sleep your dentist will be able to wake you with a tap of the arm. Local anaesthetic will be used to ensure you are numb throughout the treatment and don’t experience any pain.

You may need someone to accompany you home and stay with you for 24 hours after your treatment. If you choose inhalation sedation, the effects will wear off in minutes after you stop using the mask. We’ll give you aftercare advice so you know what to do following your appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions

It’s common to have lots of questions about your treatment. We’ve answered some of the most popular questions below.

Yes, we will use the same local anaesthetic to numb the area before treatment begins. The only difference is the addition of sedation medication to help you to relax and feel more comfortable.

This all depends on the type of sedation you choose. You can drive after a period of time with inhalation sedation but you cannot drive for 24 hours following IV sedation. You will need to have a chaperone with you to escort you home and stay with you for at least 24 hours if you opt for IV sedation.

IV sedation is not suitable for children, but your dentist may recommend inhalation sedation to help nervous children to feel more relaxed at the dentist.
