What is composite bonding?

Composite bonding is a modern cosmetic dental treatment that is incredibly fast and effective for hiding minor imperfections. We carefully colour-match composite resin to your natural tooth colour and then apply this directly to the treatment area. This is then shaped, hardened and polished to perfection. This treatment is ideal for creating balance and symmetry in your smile. Composite bonding can achieve results similar to veneers or crowns, but in a much shorter space of time.

The procedure

Composite bonding is minimally invasive, which means we don't need to alter the underlying tooth structure to complete the treatment. The composite material is applied directly to the tooth, forming a protective layer. This layer will wear down evenly over time, rather than coming loose from the tooth like a veneer might. This typically lasts for 5 years before the composite will need to be replaced.

Is composite bonding right for me?

Composite bonding might not be right for everyone, but some people can achieve incredible transformations with this simple treatment. If you are looking for a more extensive or permanent restoration, veneers might be a more suitable option.

But if you are looking for a fast and effective way to hide chips, cracks, discolouration, gaps, uneven teeth, worn enamel or misaligned teeth, composite bonding could be highly effective. You will need to consider the lifespan of this treatment, as it will need to be repeated or replaced with veneers after around 5 years.

Frequently Asked Questions

It’s common to have lots of questions about your treatment. We’ve answered some of the most popular questions below.

No, the composite resin will not respond to the whitening ingredients in teeth whitening products. If you plan to whiten your teeth, this should be completed before composite bonding so that we can match the colour to your teeth.

Composite bonding is a cost-effective alternative to veneers. It is more commonly used on single teeth, but full composite veneers are also available. If you want a more permanent restoration, veneers might be better suited, but composite bonding is ideal for addressing minor imperfections.

Composite bonding will typically last from 5-10 years, depending on the location and how careful you are. Some things will make your composite bonding wear away faster, or could cause it to chip away. We'll give you comprehensive aftercare advice to help you keep your teeth looking beautiful for longer.
