What are clear aligners?

The Invisalign system is the original clear aligner treatment plan. Instead of using brackets and wires fixed to the teeth, this system uses a series of clear plastic aligners, similar to a retainer. These apply gentle and strategic pressure to the teeth to gradually move the teeth. You wear the aligners for 20-22 hours per day, removing them only to eat, drink and brush your teeth.

How does Invisalign work?

Invisalign is a sophisticated system that all starts with a 3D scan of your mouth and teeth. We then determine the optimum position for each tooth and the path required to get them there. This information is used to create a case of aligners specifically for you.

Each aligner applies gentle pressure to your teeth to move them into the correct position. As you move through your case of aligners, you'll get closer and closer to perfect alignment. It's important to wear your aligners for 20-22 hours per day, which means you'll also wear them when you sleep.

Treatment times will vary depending on your alignment issues and could take anywhere from 6 months to 2 years. We'll give you a better idea of how long you can expect to wear your Invisalign clear aligners during your initial consultation.

Invisalign vs Fixed Braces

The end result might be the same, but there are some key differences in the treatment plans. With fixed braces, you can't remove them to eat and drink so you may need to make changes to your diet to avoid damaging your braces. You will also need to visit the dentist for every adjustment, which can mean more time in the dentist's chair if you choose fixed braces.

Invisalign offers the following perks:

  • Remove your aligners to eat and drink
  • No need to visit the dentist for every adjustment
  • Easy to brush your teeth
  • Comfortable, lightweight plastic aligners
  • Continue to play sports, even contact sports

Who is a good candidate for Invisalign?

To be a good candidate for Invisalign, you need to have a treatment alignment issue. There are some orthodontic issues that Invisalign cannot help with, but we can suggest alternatives in this instance. You also need to be able to follow the treatment plan.

For Invisalign to be effective, you need to commit to wearing your aligners for at least 20 hours per day. Any less, and the treatment won't be effective. Since you can remove your aligners to eat, drink and brush your teeth, you will need to remember to rinse your aligners and put them back in again.

Invisalign Teen includes wear indicators that will show your dentist if you have been wearing them for long enough. If you don't wear your aligners for long enough, the treatment will take longer and could be more uncomfortable.

What to expect from your treatment journey

We want you to feel empowered and informed every step of the way. Understand what to expect during your treatment with this simple guide. Your exact treatment plan might change, but this will be explained during your consultation.

During your initial consultation, you will have the opportunity to ask questions about your treatment and how it works. We will also examine your teeth and take scans of the mouth to determine your treatment plan.

When your aligners are ready, you will return to the practice to collect them. We'll show you how to put them in, take them out and how to care for them. You can then begin your treatment.

When you have completed your case of aligners, you can visit the practice for a final checkup. We can then prepare your retainer or complete any other final treatment to put the finishing touches on your smile, such as composite bonding or teeth whitening.

Frequently Asked Questions

It’s common to have lots of questions about your treatment. We’ve answered some of the most popular questions below.

There is no specific lower age limit, you simply need to have all of your adult teeth and you should have an alignment issue that needs to be corrected with orthodontics. There is also no upper age limit, provided you have good overall oral health.

We understand that life can get in the way and it's possible you might forget to wear your aligners. If this happens once in your treatment, you can simply continue wearing your aligners when you remember. However, if this happens regularly, or if you leave them out for longer than a day, you need to contact the practice for advice, as this can cause issues with your treatment and make it less effective.
