Implant Retained Dentures explained

Implant retained dentures have a smaller plate which attaches to 4-6 dental implants placed in your jawbone. Choose from snap in dentures which are easily removed for cleaning, or opt for permanent fixed dentures for a secure fit and complete confidence. If your dentures are always giving you trouble, this could be a lasting solution that upgrades your quality of life.

  • Fixed or removable options
  • Eat your favourite foods again
  • No more messy denture adhesive
  • 4-6 implants required per arch

The procedure

With implant retained dentures, we start by scanning your mouth and jaw to determine if you're a suitable fit for treatment. We use this information to guide our treatment plan, placing the implants at strategic points to provide a solid anchor for a snap in or fixed full arch restoration. We'll also carefully design your smile to suit your unique facial features for a fully natural-looking restoration.

Caring for your implants

The success rate for dental implants can be as high as 97% when the implants are cared for properly. It's important to commit to excellent oral hygiene in order to protect the gum and bone structure which supports your dental implants and denture.

To care for your dental implants, you will need to clean your denture daily. You'll also need to care for your gums and commit to regular checkups to ensure there are no signs of gum disease. Gum disease can lead to inflammation in the socket that holds the implant, which can cause the implant to come loose. Thankfully, we can minimise the risk of this happening through good oral health and regular dental checkups.

We place between four and six implants in the jaw bone and leave these to heal. They will fuse with the bone and create a solid foundation to hold your denture in place.

You can choose between "snap on" dentures or fixed dentures that can only be removed by your dentist. We'll place the healing abutments on top of the dental implants and then place your bespoke denture.

It can take some time to get used to wearing implant retained dentures, but we'll be there to answer your questions every step of the way.

Frequently Asked Questions

It’s common to have lots of questions about your treatment. We’ve answered some of the most popular questions below.

Yes, you can sleep in your dentures. It's important to remember that you will need to care for your denture as you would your natural teeth. This means brushing twice a day and paying close attention to your gums.

The implant that is placed in your jaw bone should last a lifetime, but the denture may need to be repaired or replaced after 10-20 years. They can last much longer in some cases, and we can help you to extend the life of your denture through excellent care.

Implant retained dentures are nearly always the superior option for replacing missing teeth. Whether you choose fixed or removable dentures, you'll find that implant retained dentures are easier to wear than traditional dentures. They take up less space in your mouth and are fixed in place with implants rather than adhesive.
